The year the hedgerow came back

We stopped cutting one boundary and let it grow. What arrived first was not what we expected.

By Ada Sample · @samplewriter

For eleven years the north hedge was trimmed flat every autumn. Last year we left it alone, partly on purpose and partly because the cutter broke in August.

By spring it had doubled in height. By June it was loud: wrens first, then a pair of yellowhammers that had not nested here in anyone's memory.

It is one hedge, one year and a broken machine.

The surprise was underneath. The ditch beside the hedge stayed damp through the dry spell, and the field margin held three kinds of orchid we had never recorded.

None of this is a method yet. It is one hedge, one year and a broken machine. But next autumn the cutter stays in the shed.

The Brief

Newsbriefs is the publishing side of LENDZ. Any account can open a publication, write issues in a block editor, and publish them at once or on a schedule. Each issue goes to its subscribers' SCIF inbox and posts an announcement to the writer's feed, where readers reply in Briefs. Writers enrolled as creators can also sell monthly or annual subscriptions at a price they set. A paid issue shows the public everything above a break the writer places.

§ 01

A publication, not a post

A publication on LENDZ has a name, a tagline, a house typeface, an accent ink and a stated rhythm, from daily to "As the spirit moves". Those choices dress every issue you send and your Publisher Page, so the work looks like yours before anyone reads a word.

Issues are built from blocks. Type a slash and the menu offers text, two sizes of heading, a pullquote, a callout, an image, a YouTube embed, a link preview, a divider, a spacer and the teaser break. Around the body sit the parts a reader expects from a serious newsletter: kicker, headline, deck, byline, cover image, optional drop caps, an issue number and a sign-off.

§ 02

From draft to inbox

One path, the same every time.

  1. 01
    Procedure 01

    Open your publication

Name it, then choose its typeface, ink, rhythm and category. Each account has one publication.

  2. 02
    Procedure 02

    Write in blocks

Draft in the editor and save as you go. Drafts wait in their own list until you are ready.

  3. 03
    Procedure 03

Publish now, or pick a time

Choose a date and an hour and the issue publishes on its own, shortly after the time you set.

  4. 04
    Procedure 04

    It is delivered

Every active subscriber gets the issue in their SCIF, marked unread until they open it. An announcement with your headline and deck posts to your feed at the same moment.

  5. 05
    Procedure 05

    Readers answer

Replies to the issue are Briefs, written from the same accounts your readers use everywhere else on LENDZ.

  6. 06
    Procedure 06

    Fix it after

Spotted a typo once it is out? Published issues can be edited from your list of published work.

Exhibit B— The SCIF: where issues land

Subscribers do not hunt for your work. Each new issue arrives in their SCIF, the private inbox for the publications they subscribe to, in your house typeface and ink. An orange count shows what is unread. Readers can see the latest issues across everything they subscribe to, or switch to one row per publication.

§ 04

Free issues and paid issues

You choose per issue. A publication can mix both.

How the money works

What you control

Exhibit 01

The price

Offer a monthly subscription, an annual one, or both. The reader sees your price at checkout.

Exhibit 02

Tiers

Create subscription tiers and mark an issue as requiring one, for the work you keep closest.

Exhibit 03

Comp codes

Create codes that readers redeem on your Publisher Page for complimentary access.

Exhibit 04

Payouts

Earnings pay out through Stripe Connect once your balance reaches the threshold you chose.

§ 08

Why it lives here

A standalone newsletter asks readers to meet you somewhere new. On LENDZ the publication is part of the same identity as everything else you do: the same handle, the same followers, the same feed. An issue announces itself where people already follow you, and the replies are the same kind of post as every other conversation you have here.

It also means one place for one voice. A writer can publish an issue on Monday and host a live room about it on Thursday with Briefings, and the audience is the same people both times.

The year the hedgerow came back

Until next week, from the north field.

Questions on file

Q01Who can publish?

Any member can open a publication and publish free issues. Paid issues and paid subscriptions require creator enrollment and a connected Stripe account.

Q02How much does it cost to run a publication?

Free issues cost nothing to publish. Selling subscriptions needs creator enrollment, $10 once, and LENDZ keeps a 10% house share of each paid invoice.

Q03Can I schedule an issue?

Yes. Pick a date and an hour, and the issue publishes shortly after that time and goes to your subscribers on its own.

Q04What do non-subscribers see on a paid issue?

Everything above the teaser break you placed. The rest is stored separately and only served to readers who are entitled to it.

Q05Can people outside LENDZ read my work?

Anyone with the link sees an issue's public page. To keep reading they join for free from that page, with the issue waiting for them, and you are recorded as the person who invited them.

Q06Do subscribers get my issues by email?

Issues are delivered to the subscriber's SCIF, the inbox inside LENDZ, and announced in your feed.

Q07Can I edit an issue after it is published?

Yes. Published issues can be reopened and corrected from your list of published work.

Publish where the conversation already is.

LENDZ is invite-only. Request clearance, open your publication, and send your first issue to readers who can answer it.
